Delving into Romanian superstitions about “luck” in dating (Things you absolutely must not do!).

Romania is a land where ancient folklore and modern life dance together—especially when it comes to the heart. If you are dating a Romanian, you’ll find that “luck” ($noroc$) is something to be guarded fiercely.

If you want to keep the “evil eye” away from your new relationship, here are the absolute “must-nots” of Romanian dating superstitions:

1. The “Corner of the Table” Curse

This is perhaps the most famous one. If you are at a group dinner or a family gathering, never sit at the corner of the table.

  • The Superstition: It is widely believed that if you sit at the corner, you will never get married.
  • The Dating Fix: If you find yourself placed there, a Romanian might jokingly (or seriously) tell you to move. If you’re a man, show you’re “marriage material” by gallantly letting someone else take the middle seat—or better yet, claim the middle yourself!

2. Don’t Give an Even Number of Flowers

In many Western cultures, a dozen (12) roses is the gold standard. In Romania, this is a disaster.

  • The Superstition: Even numbers of flowers are reserved strictly for funerals and the dead. * The Rule: Always give an odd number (1, 3, 5, etc.). If you bring 12 roses to a first date, you aren’t being romantic; you’re accidentally implying the relationship is dead on arrival.

3. Watch Out for the “Curent” (The Draft)

While not strictly about “luck,” the Romanian fear of the curent (a draft of cold air from an open window) is legendary.

  • The Dating Context: If you are on a date in a car or a restaurant and you open a window that creates a cross-breeze, your partner might get genuinely anxious.
  • The Belief: It’s believed to cause everything from toothaches to “bad luck” in health. Closing the window for her shows you are a protective and “aware” partner.

4. Don’t Pass Things Over the Threshold

If you are picking your date up at her house, never shake hands or hand her a gift/flowers over the doorway threshold.

  • The Superstition: The threshold is a boundary between worlds. Passing things over it is said to lead to quarrels and a quick breakup.
  • The Fix: Either step fully inside the house or wait until she steps outside before handing over those (odd-numbered!) flowers.

5. The “Spilled Salt” and “Empty Bottles”

  • Spilling Salt: If you’re cooking a romantic meal together and spill salt, it predicts a massive fight. To break the curse, you must throw some of the spilled salt over your left shoulder.
  • Empty Bottles on the Table: Once a bottle of wine or water is finished, take it off the table immediately. Leaving an empty bottle on the table is seen as an omen of poverty and “empty” luck for the couple.
